Review of Z for Zachariah (2015) by Kyle B — 19 Oct 2015
In this time of a mega dump of post apocalyptic movies for some reason Hollywood is obsessed with these days, this is a really interesting one. It's not sci fi, it's not some ridiculous reason why many people are dead, and there isn't some big conspiracy to try to find out if there are any others left.
It's a great character study for Margot Robbie who is one of our great rising stars along with Chiwetel Edjiofor and especially Chris Pine. It's a very calm movie that is all talk and isn't given some left hand turn where one of them is out to kill the others so they can survive with the food supplies or anything like that.
It also has a nice balance of faith and science which you don't see in most movies these days. This is the director Craig Zobel's 3rd feature film following one of my favorite movies of 2012 that came out of nowhere for me called Compliance that deals with a similar small cast structure that seems to really work for him.
I'm fascinated to see what else this guy has up his sleeves because he truly is making some creative movies.
