Review of Z for Zachariah (2015) by Logan M — 04 Dec 2015
I really liked watching Z for Zachariah. The premise is generic at best, but all three (and yes there's only three) actors did a really good job at keeping this movie interesting. I think my problem is that nothing really happens. It's about Ann, who thinks she is the only survivor from a nuclear war that destroyed all of civilization. She comes across Loomis, who also believed he was the only survivor, and from there they begin a friendship/sort of romance that drives the film.
The actors do indeed keep the film interesting for 90 minutes, but I don't believe I'll ever re-visit it. Margot Robbie plays Ann, and for the most part she's very good. But there are instances in which her character acts a lot younger than she probably should. There are times in which her acting is very awkward. Perhaps that's what the director wanted, but when you live on your own for a long time like Ann did, I would have thought she would become more mature than her character comes across as.
The two then meet a third person, Caleb, who's intentions are unclear at first. From there the film never really picks up. In fact, it kind of becomes less interesting as it turns into a love triangle between the three characters. I know that was what it wanted to do but when I read part of the synopsis of the book it's based on, it seemed to cut that part out. Who knows, but I think the film would have been better served taking the story elsewhere.
+Great performances.
+Few good emotional moments.
-Love triangle was uninteresting.
-Really slow.
6.0/10.
