Review of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie (2004) by Sean M — 17 Nov 2004
If this were a year and a half ago, I might have enjoyed this movie a lot more than I did now. I use to be a really huge Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, but through time I?ve lost interest. But that is the same for most games I?ve played.
The story is pretty simple. An ancient evil spirit has awaken and is determined to finish a battle started long ago. That battle is between him and a Pharaoh. The Pharaoh?s soul now resides in the body of a young boy named Yugi. And you know where this leads... card battles.
Yes, there isn?t anything less exciting than watching people play a game. Except if it is watching a movie about people playing a game. Now, I use to know these cards, but watching this I felt very lost in what was going on.
And the dialogue in this film is nothing more than laughable. Even in moments when characters are saying profound statements, you can?t help but chuckle. Which makes me sad, because in the show I like the talking more than the duels.
I think fans of the game and/or show will find this film entertaining. Simple minded folks who know nothing of the game or show might find the pretty pictures amusing. Everyone else might want to see a movie like Pokemon The First Movie. Yeah, you heard me right!
