I think that "Yu-Gi-Oh!" is a pokemon spin off that was hatched for the sole purpose of merchandising playing cards and the game used in the animated series and movies. Children will bug their parents to buy them cards and game pieces and parents will reluctantly spend money to make their kids happy.
The company that owns "Yu-Gi-Oh!" is just trying to make money.
