Review of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie (2004) by Chuck M — 17 Nov 2007
Predictable, with no intriguing special effects or movie magic. This was like a four or five part regular episode, fitting in between Battle City and Waking the Dragons. Joey, Tristan and Tea had even smaller roles than they usually do, and Pegasus got pwned like a chump against Kaiba - it would figure that Kaiba would whip him in a follow-up duel (everyone gets lucky), but the Pegasus-Kaiba showdown brought no suspense or intrigue.
Yugi handled Kaiba very well, until the Anubis character started bending and changing the rules of the duel randomly and to no real effect. (Normally, the rules are inconsistent; this made them simply arbitrary.
) I enjoyed it, because I take my Yu-Gi-Oh! with a healthy suspension of disbelief, but this could have been done much better.
