Review of You've Got Mail (1998) by Max.pink M — 22 Apr 2010
I'm sure its a great movie . . .
YOU'VE GOT MAIL is sooo stereotypically American rife with stereotypical American folkways and mores that its DISGUSTING and makes me want to puke.
Its a movie for the "boring-repressive" types who enjoy listening to NPR (National Public Radio) ALL THE TIME; ugh.
Its like NPR--if you listen to it long enough--tries to tell people what to think and what to like about everything WITHOUT taking into consideration the DIVERSITY of inter-cultural and intra-cultural dynamics of our nation.
Anyone reading this from or living in another country:
YOU'VE GOT MAIL and SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE--they're both very closely related in terms of tone, actors, and characterizations-- are films made by stereotypical-Americans who have a very "NPR-esque" ideal of social etiquette that I find very stifling and oppressive to "REAL DIVERSITY" in our country.
Let me tell you: here in America not everyone is "like" Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan--yet its like to be considered "normal" here in American MASS-MEDIA "you" have to resemble Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan in some way.
Look at the guests on GOOD MORNING AMERICA, THE TODAY SHOW, and NPR (National Public Radio) generally the guests are relatively prim and proper like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks . . .
Those living in foreign countries and even here in America rarely get to see "regular dudes and babes" as guests on popular TV and radio shows.
I'm saying, YOU'VE GOT MAIL and SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE both give us highly romanticized views and paradigms of American culture.
