Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Lila G — 16 Jul 2008
This one definitely needs to be watched with time to invest into it. It's a beautifully filmed piece, but with such depth to it, that it will confuse most people. If you are already exposed to the esoteric language of it, then you can follow it some. If you understand the ideas behind quantum physics and the non-existence of absolute space and time, you will see the effort that Coppolla put into the film to create a story around these concepts. Without this base knowledge and understanding, you will not get this film. I think Francis was trying hard to articulate something that centuries of mystics have been trying to articulate, but it's not easy, and in that...he took a challenge in trying to do it on film. Particularly, I love the aspect of the linguistics in it...the fact that they don't give subtitles to the ancient languages spoken, or the one Dominick creates.
It says alot about the language of the film too, and how linguistics has separated from the profound. As the Tao says..."The Tao that can be told, is not the Eternal Tao".
