Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Hilary B — 23 Dec 2007
I still don't know what to think of this movie. really incredible performances by tim roth (much love for him), bruno ganz, and alexandra maria lara, especially the latter when you consider how much CRAZY acting she was put through-playing three characters, the sanskrit, etc.
and it certainly is beautiful to look at, very lush. but it comes across as a somewhat unsuccessful, yet earnest and passionately done, film of far too many ideas. very heady, complex ideas about age, language, love, etc.
very easy to get lost. but more than a lot of movies this year, it left me thinking (especially after a q&a session with coppola, roth, and lara), and i'll probably see it a second time.
