Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Berdine B — 25 May 2008
Certainly pretentious, overcomplicated to the point that Coppola himself may have been confused...but mysterious enough to make it very enjoyable. It is unsettling at times, beautiful at others, but always interesting.
The use of colors and upside down images leaves much to interpretation, which is a good thing in this instance. And Tim Roth is great in this. I see an academy award in his future as long as he sticks to the good roles.
He adds a lot to this very complicated film. It IS an easy movie to instantly dislike, but if you want a challenge in your film, give it a chance and watch it more than once. If anything else, enjoy it for the intriguing images along with the Fountain-like love story.
Once again, Coppola's ego may have grown since his last film, but if you can get past it, this can be a rewarding film.
