Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Caleb D — 29 May 2008
Read fellow Flixster reviewer Eric Harris' review:
"Certainly pretentious, overcomplicated to the point that Coppola himself may have been confused...but mysterious enough to make it very enjoyable. It is unsettling at times, beautiful at others, but always interesting. The use of colors and upside down images leaves much to interpretation, which is a good thing in this instance...it IS an easy movie to instantly dislike, but if you want a challenge in your film, give it a chance and watch it more than once. If anything else, enjoy it for the intriguing images along with the Fountain-like love story. Once again, Coppola's ego may have grown since his last film, but if you can get past it, this can be a rewarding film.".
I agree. This movie was almost universally disliked by critics (including Roger Ebert!)who were probably looking for something else from Coppola's first film in ten years. While I don't disagree with many of the criticisms, I found the film to be pretty fascinating, at the very least conceptually. Definitely something I'll have to watch more than once.
And Tim Roth is so great. They could make Weekend At Bernie's Part III, with Tim Roth playing Bernie, and it'd be AMAZING.
