Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Sorin H — 22 Dec 2008
A disappointment. I was naturally attracted to the movie because it has many things Romanian and many things Eliade. Now, it is quite clear to me that Mircea Eliade - a scientist before everything else - wrote fiction just for fun. He was amusing himself by making his characters 'wear' his theories ('The Myth of Eternal Return') and see what they look like from outside.
Why Coppola did this movie is a great enigma. True, Coppola made a number of brilliant films (like the Godfather trilogy or 'Apocalypse Now') and a number of sluggish movies - like this one.
