Review of Youth Without Youth (2007) by Ann L — 20 May 2010
YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH.
Fascinating. This is a clever and imaginative sci-fi adventure-love story based upon a novel by Mircea Eliade. The movie has a shadowy, dreamy, film noir quality to it which is just beautiful and mysterious. Tim Roth was very good in the role of linguistics professor Dominic Matei, seeking to end his life in despair by suicide when he is struck by a bolt of lightning which causes him to change his plans. Instead the Romanian intellectual begins to age in reverse and now, in a stronger position than ever having learned from his mistakes and shortcomings, joyfully embarks on a romantic quest for the love, knowledge, and truth which had eluded him when he was a younger man. But will Dr. Matei succeed the second time around? Will the evil Nazi doctor discover his secret and convince him to come to work for the Fascists in creating an Aryan race of supermen?--there's always that fly in the ointment. You will just have to watch the movie to find out.
