Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Ryan J — 01 Jan 2011
It's a bit uneven, finding it difficult to match tone and narrative, but Arteta has great success with uniquely dark, humorously pitiable and stunted characters (a powerful skill on display in most of his work, most comparably the brilliant but forgotten Chuck & Buck). Michael Cera gets to have fun playing type and against type, and in a few particular moments, delves into the heart of things more powerfully than he might receive the credit for.
It is a bizarre endeavor into deeply relatable feelings, matched to an absurd narrative that jumps from one premise to the net. It creates tidal waves with its tonal shifts, jumpy narrative, indie-pop array of recognizable supporting characters and a kind of candy cynicism. The energy it what got me.
