Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Matthew M — 15 Jan 2011

I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought that I would like it, and since I'm still on my 2010 movie binge that won't quit until the end of February, I was delighted when this relatively under the radar Michael Cera flick popped up on one of my premium movie channels. I was a little let down.

Michael Cera has carved out a niche in Hollywood as an often sorta nerdy and somewhat goofy high school kid. In 'Youth in Revolt' Cera doesn't stray far from his typical roles, but his character's alter ego Francios was appropriately cool and a nice enough change. Steve Buscemi, Zach Galifanakis, Ray Liotta, and Fred Willard round out a cast that ends up under utilized and barely in the movie.

Largely forgettable, none of the movie's wow moments had much wow, most of the movie's premise was just a bit off, and all of the time went by slowly. Still, the romantic heart of the characters and film kept me just interested enough to stay awake late on a Friday night.

If George Michael was one of your favorite characters in 'Arrested Development' you'll probably appreciate another of Michael Cera's explorations of love. Otherwise, I would advise you to pass.
