Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Amber L — 20 Mar 2011
Romantic teen comedy for adults in the tradition of Superbad, in which girl meets boy, enthralls boy, and boy gets himself into a great deal of tribulation trying to beat out the competition. The girl is named Sheeni, the boy is Nick (Cena), and the rival is a Brad Dupree character (think the dastardly efficiency expert in American Beauty) with a sweater tied around his neck, perfect hair, fluent in French, and an ego the size of the Arc de Triomphe.
With a sleazy divorced dad, troublesome sleep-around mom, and terribly nerdy tendencies, Nick has his hands full keeping Sheeni's interest. Nick invents an alter ego, the suave, dangerous Francois Dillinger, who toughens Nick up, but gets him into heaps of trouble.
When Sheeni's religious fanatic parents decide that Nick is pretty close to being the Antichrist and ship Sheeni off to French boarding school, Nick and alter ego Francois embark on a bold plan to get her back. No great work of comic genius, but a cute movie with some good laughs with no gross viewer turn-offs ala teen flicks like American Pie and There's Something About Mary.
