Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Alex L — 29 Apr 2011
Here's "Youth in Revolt", a movie where young people... well... revolt. If I had to sum up this, basically put "Rebel Without a Cause", "Super Bad" and " Fight Club" in a blender, and it is probably this movie.
I am reviewing this without reading( or even heard about it, actually) of the book this was based on, which seems to be a little different from the novel. Still. I found this to be a fun, entertaining and deeply creative film.
Michael Cera plays Nick Twisp, a 16 year old boy who lives with his mother and step dad. His step dad goes ito trouble and they have to run away for awhile to Ukiah. Here they stay at a traler park, where Nick meets Sheeni, a girl for who he will quickly fall. But he has to go back home, so he promises Sheeni they will be together and the only way of staying with her is being a bad boy and being thrown out. As he starts acting as a totally different person.
This helps me deffend my honest opinion: I don't think Michael Cera is a bad actor. He is given most of the time similar roles and that's why it starts to be tiring. If you watch "Youth in Revolt", however, you will see thathe plays to different characters, and both perfectly. The first one is Nick, the typical nerdy guy we are used to see. he second one is François, a cold, mean and badass son of a bitch. This characters are the same, as they represent the good side and the bad side of a person. And Cera as François, is simply amazing.
The film itself is amazing. If you watch the first 45 minutes or so, you think that the whole movie is that typicl romantic comedy and that you can predict the ending. The beauty of this it is not. Trying not be very spoiler, from that part onwards, the movie changes drastoally, police suddenly comes, people start running away, getting drugged, and everything happens very quickly. Maybe tht is the reason people dont apreciate it that much. In my case, as long as it as a purpose I don't mind the speed it is, just as long as I understad the story.
I liked the cast, I like the settings, and in general is a very good and nice movie. Maybe the relationships are a little sudden and drags at one or two times, but I still think this was good. It treats well the subject f young people being badm in this case with a purpode of making themselves as someone who the ar not just to get laid.
A very good, pretty great acted and an interesting and creative story, "Youth In Revolt" is a good way to pass time and still feel good inside.
