Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Joshua L — 07 Feb 2012
"Youth in Revolt" 10 Scale Rating: 8.0 (Great) ...
I don't really think all that highly of Michael Cera as an actor because he always seems to be the exact same guy. However, I tend to like a lot of movies that he happens to be in.
"Youth in Revolt" is about a boy who stumbles across the girl of his dreams while he and his parents are staying in a remote trailer park. Just when things are going great for him, they decide to move back to the city and he has to leave his girlfriend behind. The two of them hatch a plan that involves him being as much of a delinquent as possible so that his parents have to send him to live with his biological dad ... who happens to leave near the trailer park that his girlfriend lives in. He creates an alter ego named Francois Dillinger to commit acts of evil so that he will have a clear conscience.
The greatest part of the movie is hands down his alter ego. Francois Dillinger not only has a hilarious name, but some of his lines made me actually chuckle out loud. The movie was witty and an excellent example of solid dark humor. It amused me and entertained me at the same time, and that is hard to come by with a lot of comedies today.
Despite being sick to death of seeing Cera in yet another quirky movie, his dialog was well written and he was full of great one liners. Sure, it had moments that seemed out of place and at times was outright stupid ... but the good far outweighed the bad and I was able to look past some of the more mediocre scenes.
I'd suggest this movie to anyone who enjoys off the wall comedies.
