Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Darren C — 24 May 2012
Youth in Revolt is the story of Nick Twisp - a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini - who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders while on a family vacation. But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheeni's encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences. Youth in Revolt has a very good and very funny storyline which will have you both laughing at the main character Nick Twisp or laughing with him. The characters were written well and Francois, Nick's alter-ego, delivers some funny scenes and Michael Cera pulls the character off well but it looks odd seeing him play someone cool instead of his usual geeky characters.
The acting was great, Michael Cera plays Nick and Francois very well and makes the characters his own and Portia Doubleday did a magnificent job playing Nick's love interest Sheeni. The entire cast did a great job playing their characters and the crew did a good job making this movie. The script and the dialogue were great and the style of humour was humorous and funny. It wasn't overused or over-the-top, it was just right for a coming-of-age story.
Youth in Revolt is a very enjoyable, funny, teenage comedy with a little bit of truth added to it. Most guys could probably relate to this, changing themselves to impress that one girl they wanted. The timing of the funny scenes were just right and the acting was great which makes for some very funny viewing. I like this movie because it delivers exactly what you're expecting from the trailer or from a Michael Cera movie. With great acting, funny comedy scenes, a well-written story and the replay factor, Youth in Revolt is one fantastic comedy nobody should miss! I've never read the book but after watching this movie, I would like to. Michael Cera and the cast have done a magnificent job of this teenage coming-of-age comedy. Great stuff and definitely worth the watch. This is one to buy on DVD!
