Review of Youth in Revolt (2009) by Dylan A — 18 Jul 2013
Quick Review:
A weird kind of "i'll do anything for love"film.
Michael Cera plays a 16 year old virgin who has a divorced family. He lives with his 48 year old mom who submits to any man who will show interest in her and a father who is mainly jobless but is able to get a a 20 something year old hottie to live with him.
On week they leave berkeley to go get away and go camping when Michael Cera meets the love of his life Sheeni, played by Portia Doubleday. They spend a magical week together but unfortunately Sheeni has a SUPER boyfriend.
In order to compete with the superboyfriend Cera creates an alternate personality. One who doesn't care one F--- about anyone or anything except getting Michael Cera de-virginized.
The film has a colorful cast but the split personality aspect of the film is sort of luke warm. The two Cera's don't really seem to build a very dynamic relationship. It's very one sided and pedestrian compared to "spoiler alert" something like Fight Club.
There are moments in the film that are surreal with lovely animations but overall it's just not strong in any particular aspect. The editing is okay, the acting is good, but nothing spectacular and the jokes are sporadically haha.
Emotionally, Cera will bring you into his pain but your heart never breaks for him. I think apart of that is because Sheeni's love for Cera is only contingent to the amount of crazy he will do for her which doesn't make her very sympathetic. Sure she's smart and pretty, but she's very selfish. Oh when am """i""" gonna get to paris. Who gives a shit if she gets her dream boyfriend or not. She's not saving the world, nor is she worth burning it down for.
