Review of You're Next (2013) by Paul J — 19 Apr 2014
A cut above your standard home invasion film. It's in the second half where the film really takes off. Love the strong female protagonist. There's plenty of effective gore and a couple plot twists I didn't see coming.
It's clever without being irritating. In fact, I'd say it's everything Cabin in the Woods tried to be but failed. You're Next maintains the horror elements - the scares & gruesome deaths - while intelligently referencing the genre.
Whereas, Cabin in the Woods continuously winked at the audience in a way too self-conscious manner, without giving us any real scares. A total let down. Thankfully, You're Next delivers where it counts.
