Review of You're Next (2013) by Richard R — 29 Jun 2014
While You're Next is meant to be some kind of family dramedy mixed with horror I saw it pretty much as another slasher film. The humour is so subtle that it doesn't even cause a titter in most cases; a lot of the characters are either not introduced, fleshed out (forgive the pun) or decidedly dull.
But if you once again forget expectations or what this film is "supposed" to be - it's a fun ride. A simple story of a home invasion where the killers did not prepare for a survivalist girlfriend to fight back - and fight back she does with some ingenious and inventive methods.
It has moments of gore (as does any horror), moments which make you jump and more than a few satisfying moments of victory - and then ends with a delightfully twisted final scene. Even the intrusive soundtrack seems purposefully designed to keep you on the back foot.
So ignore what people say this film is supposed to be - you won't laugh your head off - but you'll still enjoy the ride.
