Review of You're Next (2013) by Kristofer S — 05 Jan 2015
You're Next discards creeping anticipatory terror in favor of constant and brutal violence. It's not unscary, maintaining plenty of tension and interest by shifting our assessments of the family and their relationships.
A lot of the early character development is shit, but it's quite satisfying to have an obnoxious family bicker-bout get violently interrupted. Erin's competence is an effective gimmick. It levels the playing field enough to add new life to old slasher tropes - which are plentiful but usually executed with style - and provides a lot of the opportunities for fun creative scenes.
The ending is fun and satisfying and stays in the brutal-irony ballsy tone that make this movie so enjoyable.
