Review of Your Name. (2016) by Chris K — 07 Apr 2017
Shinkai has been known as a visionary for a long while now, and his latest film is easily is best work as well as his most beautiful.
The story follows two seemingly unrelated high school students that swap bodies within their dreams, living each other's lives in suitably comedic fashion. After a pretty big twist, though, we learn that their destinies are intertwined in surprising ways. It's a surprising love story, where "Freaky Friday" meets "Groundhog Day" meets "Back to the Future" and has some surprisingly clever twists. There are some running gags and some thematic elements that are typically "very anime" in style and I felt removed me from the situation and it lessened some serious emotional moments.
It should be mentioned, in its own paragraph, that the animation and art of Your Name is incredibly gorgeous and stunning. The way Shinkai and his team capture beauty and nature is, bar none, top of the line artistry.
Aside from some atypical directorial choices the story, music, and overall pace is excellent and has really proved Shinkai's sensitive care to tell a most surprising love story.
