Review of Your Name. (2016) by Peter B — 17 Apr 2017
Your Name is a pretty decent film, it's cute and pretty to look at, but I just can't believe how overrated it is. Don't get me wrong it's a good, decent animated film, but I just don't get what people see in this film that is so special.
Even the director Makoto Shinkai wasn't that happy with it, and I can see why. It's a bit unfocused and the message it's trying to get through is quite muddy. The animation did not really take my breathe away, it's a pretty enough film, but there were prettier Myazaki and Shinkai films previously.
If you want to see some gorgeous animation check out his earlier short film, The Garden of Words. I'm not a huge fan of that film either, but it is undeniably and incredibly gorgeous. In conclusion, I expected a bit more, and overall thought it was nothing more than a fun and charming good time, I don't get the hype.
