Review of Your Highness (2011) by Michael V — 06 Nov 2011
David Gordon Green follows up Pineapple Express with another stoner action/adventure comedy. Really odd sounding combination. And it works very very well. This will play great as a double feature. This could have easily went down the path of shitty spoofs like Epic Movie or Meet the Spartans but it was put in talented hands who take their craft serious.
You get evil witches firing lightning all over the place, there are mechanical beasts right out of the original Clash of the Titans and there is a weird hand monster thing that is cool as hell. Its also mega gory, limbs are hacked off and there is plenty of blood.
And all the silly humor you got in Pineapple comes along for the ride. Hopefully this puts Danny McBride up in stardom since this is his first as the main role I believe and he carried it wonderfully.
James Franco is being himself but also gets plenty of laughs jabbing away at the image of the handsome prince who writes poetry while also being handy with a sword. Portman is her usual brilliant self complete with a very hot bathing scene.
Justin Theroux nearly steals the whole thing as Leezar. Best known for smaller roles Theroux is a comic revelation here delivering many of the films best lines. Zooey Deschanel is the only part I didn't care for.
She really wasn't given much of a role to begin with but she didn't bring any spark to it like she usually does. Pretty much you take the best parts of all those great '80s sword and sorcery films like Conan, Beastmaster, and Willow with stoner comedy and it works wonderfully.
Plus after watching this I feel that no outfit is complete unless it comes with a Minotaur penis necklace.
