Review of Your Friends & Neighbors (1998) by Mister C — 28 Jul 2004
Starring: Amy Brenneman, Aaron Eckhart, Catherine Keener, Nastassja Kinski, Jason Patric, and Ben Stiller.
Written and Directed by Neil LaBute.
Rated R (for graphic sexual dialogue, strong sexuality and language).
Running time approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.
This is a brillaint film. Neil LaBute's talents in both writing and directing have impressed me since I saw Nurse Betty and In the Company of Men. Now that I have seen The Shape of Things and this one, Your Friends & Neighbors, I now know that he has one of the darkest sides to him of any writer out there. The cruelty of some of his characters is unparalleled in films of today, and yet we are able to enjoy their conversations. He has proven that a film does not have to incorporate likeable characters in order to be likeable itself. Oh, and these performances are fantastic, by the way. **** (out of ****) A.
