Review of Youngblood (1986) by Connor B — 07 Oct 2007
This is a classic hockey movie, right up there with slapshots. Its not funny like slapshots, but it has a good story if you can ignore the 80s cheese at times. Finally a hockey movie that actually takes place in Canada, and Hamilton and Thunderbay no less. The Hamilton mustangs are loosely based on the team of the same name in Hamilton, while the Thunderbay Bombers represented the Broadstreet Bullies of the Philadelphia Flyers. Rob Loweâ??s character Dean Youngblood is apparently based on Mike Modano, an American trying to make in the rough and tough world of Canadian Junior Hockey. NHL players Eric Nesterenko, Peter Zezel, and Steve Thomas make appearances. Keanu Reeves as a French Canadian goaltender was classic.
The only thing that really bothered me was the fighting, no self respecting hockey player fights with their sticks first and then drops the gloves. Its like a sword fight with hockey sticks, ridiculous! Any hockey fan or player knows to drop the stick and gloves before fighting. Still a worth while watch.
