Review of Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) by Richard S — 04 Apr 2010
They needn't trail this as a Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg film really. It oozes out of every pore. Classic mid 80s adventure fare in the vein of the Goonies and the Indiana Jones films. Nicolas Rowe is excellent in the central role.
..to the etent I can't see him now without thinking about it...though it isn't Conan Doyle's Holmes ata ll. The film makers clearly have reverence for the subject, with the closing coda acknowledging this is not intended to be canon and breaks a lot of the rules, but is an affectionate addition to the myth.
Occasionally stagey, silly plot, but some excellent and genuinely unnerving special effects and some charming in jokes. Excellent nostalgia and a brillaint bank holiday afternoon film. It deserves to be seen more.
