Review of Young People Fucking (2007) by Kinnon P — 20 Jul 2008

Film knocks it out of the park on a lot of levels, literally only drops a star due to the fact that the nature of the film means that you'll connect more strongly to some groups of characters than others. I personally wish they'd focused a little more on The Exe's and the Friends out of all the groups, as they has ana amzing amount of chemistry going on between the actors.

The dialogue and delivery is quick fire , crisp and funny, and also thanks to wonderfully open minded way the subject matter is presented, extremely adult. That's not to say it doesn't revel in all the easy comedic facets of sex, there's laughs galore in all our couples sexual adventures, but it's the little touches of emotional connection, the sense of vulnerability, embarassment, that really raises the whole film to another level.

As I say, every segment is strong, some more than others, and the films episodic nature guides us carefully though every groups "ups and down", even when one section lags a little you're never long enough to get bored before it moves on to another story. normally this would hamper some of the key emotional moments in the film, but the writers and directors have weighted the time for their moments really well, so each group never feels underserviced.

The cast do great work together, it's funny, sexy, and sometimes gloriously cringeworthy, mostly because every viewer will find at least a few moments when they can say "been there", so it's honesty is really it's best feature.

For me, the standouts of the film are writer Actor Aaron Abrams, and the lovely carly Pope as Matt and Christy: "the friends". They get the bulk of some fantastically shrewd and fast dialogue that kevin Smith wishes he'd written, and for me there's was the most rewarding of all the arcs.
