Review of Young People Fucking (2007) by James M — 01 Aug 2008
Firstly I think it's only fair to tell you that when I chose to watch this film the title was 'YPF' as opposed to the wonderfully apt 'Young People F**king'! Whatever your preconceptions it's actually quite a lovely little film with some surprisingly gentle and heartfelt moments.
It follows the experiences of five couples (well four and 'something else') from the start of the night until the inevitable 'afterglow'. The editing is choppy enough to ensure a good balance between the fun stories and the tender ones.
Whilst a couple of the performances where overplayed for laughs most of them stayed on the right side and managed a balance between realistic intimate humour and the unspoken (particularly the Ex's).
The politics of sex for our generation are different from those of our parents, whilst the mechanics remain the same (for the most part, you'll know what I mean when you watch it!) the attitudes and dynamics have most defiantly changed. I think if for no other reason this film is pleasing for it's light but unpretentious presentation of the relationships/relations that we find ourselves in today.
Worth a watch, just maybe not with gran.
