Review of Young People Fucking (2007) by Nikolai E — 06 Feb 2009

There's a lot of great stuff here, the characters are all very distinct despite being practically interchangeable in terms of body type, which is crucial in an ensemble film, the script is really funny, and for such a provocative and frankly kinky film, it's just cute as a button.

But it also feels like there's something missing, as while each situation is quite unique, the characters are all conventionally attractive heterosexuals with the same amount of sexual experience, which makes the whole thing feel a bit monotone.

There's also an absolute minimum of drama, which helps keep the mood light and funny, but it really seems like a wasted opportunity considering the boldness of the subject. Skillful but insubstantial, I'd compare it to a really good sitcom, except the only analogous one that springs to mind is Coupling, which is actually a lot better.

But you could do worse.
