Review of Young People Fucking (2007) by Craig B — 07 Jun 2009
YPF is a quirky indie comedy written and directed by freshman filmmaker Martin Gero. As such, it isn't a bad first stab at a movie. YPF follows five different sexual encounters during the course of one evening, ranging from the stale inertia of a married couple to the awkward fumblings of an impromptu college threesome.
The action is presented simultaneously, jumping from couple to couple so that foreplay, coitus, and afterglow all end up in tidy - or untidy if you do it properly - packages. However, because the plot follows the exploits of five encounters, the action tends to bounce around a lot (no pun intended.
) The movie is edited this way because some of the humor is dependent upon the juxtaposition between the different couples. The decision does lead to some funny moments, but at the expense of character continuity.
The script is lovely, but the actors are not; many of the performances are forced. At times, I felt like I was watching a play, but without the buzz I'd get from a live performance.
