Review of Young Ones (2014) by Dean K — 06 Dec 2014
In this festival darling, water is scarce. A father (Michael Shannon) tries to hold his family together as the world falls apart. Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult and Kodi Smit-McPhee also co-star.
This is basically a western except set in a frustrating future. Instead of oil or money, it is water. Michael Shannon is one of the best actors working today who can emote their desperation. Hoult makes a successful turn as a slimy up-incomer.
I am not sure why this movie is so praised at festivals unless it has lots of a environmentalist fans. The movie is kind of dull as a whole. Not much happens and the plot isn't really heavily thought out. It's kind of one those films that you have to see something deeper or see nothing at all. I just found the water well dry. (3 out of 5) So Says the Soothsayer.
