Review of Young Guns II (1990) by Darren M — 27 Sep 2010
Despite some of the cast returning with many new characters along for the ride, this is a lame sequel, mainly lassoed in by a weak script and the lack of energy that the first one had. It starts with potential, with an old man claiming to be Billy the Kid and telling some gut on the road his adventures with the gang after the events of the first one.
However, those parts with the youthful Emilio Estevez as Billy may seem more exciting, but in actuality, they drag. A lot. Especially during the action scenes, ironically. The Brat Pack leads are having fun, but that doesn't mean I am, too.
I still don't mind that the filmmakers are using Western revisionist mythology , but, c'mon, they could've done more, what with the expectations set by the first one. Splendid cinematography, restrained technique (which was not so restrained in the original), good music, and a showstopping turn by William L.
Petersen do manage to distract though. But not for long as the attempts to make more humor are flat! Looks like this went out in a blaze of... nothing.
