Review of Young Guns (1988) by Tarl H — 01 Aug 2009
This could be the perfect Western.
Young Guns is the story of Billy the Kid, his regulators, and the Lincoln County war. Young guns stars Emilio Estevez in his finest role (and yes I remember Breakfast Club and Repo man) as Billy the Kid, Keifer Sutherland as Tresiah "Doc" Skurlock, Lou Diamond Phillips as Chavez Y Chavez, Durmont Molruney as Dirty Steve Stephens, and Jack Palace as Murphy. The plot centers around Billy the Kid and his regulators as they take on Murphy, Sheriff Dolons, and the Santa Fe ring in 1800's new Mexico.
Put simply, this movie a thrill ride. It is nonstop action, clever writing, and charismatic portrayals of classic western figures. Its not meant to be a documentary so those critics who rate it low due to accuracy are really being quite mindless. This movie is meant to be fun, entertaining, and memorable, which it does with very little effort.
Yes it is a "guy" movie and any man in his 20's and 30's who doesnt simply love this movie or quote from it is insane. It has some of the greatest lines, action sequences, and "buddy" themes of any film made in the last 30 years. Its definitely a "get together with some guys and drink some beers" popcorn flick.
Youre doing yourself a great disservice by not watching this movie and going in with the open mind to have fun and enjoy a great flick.
