Review of Young Frankenstein (1974) by Tommy H — 25 May 2015
I'm not a fan of Mel Brooks but when I watch Young Frankenstein I can see what the fans see in his movies. His other movies I find are like SNL skits and I'm definitely not an SNL fan. Also I can't stand seeing Mel in his movies. He always plays the most obvious and annoying characters, and to make things worst he seems like a really nice guy so I feel bad not liking him. What Mel Brooks does was perfected in Young Frankenstein and it proves that his kind of humor can work when it's done right. It just seems like he put a lot of thought into this one, where his other movies it seems like the first joke to pop into his head is what he'd use no matter how unfunny it might be. Kind of like the Roger Corman of spoof movies.
I always found it odd that the spoof genre is so absurd you'd think it would be the easiest to write for, but so many of them fail. The randomness in these movies is great but it has to be artfully done.
