Review of Young at Heart (1987) by Vicki S — 05 May 2008
A remake of Curtiz's 1938 melodrama Four Daughters with Sinatra in the John Garfield role and - at Sinatra's insistance - a very different ending!
It's corny at times but there's something about the chemistry between Day, Sinatra AND Gig Young that I find irresistable.
Sinatra's performance, particularly, takes this bit of fluff into a very dark place indeed. It's almost Wilderesque in its attempt to muddy the waters between comedy and tragedy.
I've seen the original and it's great - but I, for one, am glad Sinatra decided his character shouldn't die and that he had the clout to make his wishes reality.
Great performances all round (there's a bleedin' Barrymore in it for cryin' out loud!), great music, great times.
