Review of Young Adult (2011) by Gavin S — 12 May 2012
I still don't know what to make of this movie...Mavis is a horrible, horrible person, but I feel somewhat sorry for her waking up pushing 40 and realizing that being popular in high school hasn't done anything good for her.
I'm also wondering if this film is a case study on the results of having mental breakdowns/acoholism/being borderline sociopathic. This movie was sad and awkward, and at the end, I don't feel like she's learned anything or is any different in any way, and maybe that's the point: that she's a sad creature doomed to be lonely forever because she's broken inside.
Patton Oswalt and Patrick Wilson are great in the roles of Matt (high school nerd who Mavis doesn't remember even though they had lockers beside each other) and Buddy (her high school sweetheart); doing great work as the 2 faces of reality in Mavis' otherwise delusional tale.
I really don't classify this as a comedy at all, but I may try watching it again at some point to see if I get any more out of it...it's a Jason Reitman movie, so it's honest, I'll give it that.
Not a bad movie, just not one I'd tell people to rush out and see...maybe someone else should tell me what I'm missing?
