Review of Young Adult (2011) by David D — 04 Dec 2012
In the same vein as Bad Santa and Bad Teacher, Young Adult is a movie about a very unlikable person living an immoral life and pursing questionable goals. But, while the other two movies are more sarcastic looks at life and not to be taken seriously, Young Adult feels grounded in reality - a dark, bleak reality.
This makes it more compelling of a movie, but also harder to watch - as its main character goes through what appears to be a mental breakdown before the audience's eyes. While the other two movies (specifically Bad Santa) had me laughing often, Young Adult had me either looking away in apprehension or glued to the screen to see what Charlize Theron's character might do next.
From a dramatic/psychological perspective, this movie does a great job. But if you're looking for a laugh riot, maybe look elsewhere.
