Review of Young Adult (2011) by Gary N — 06 Dec 2012
If Judd Apatow made arthouse this might be the outcome. Unfortunately, the whole thing left me unmoved and disappointed. It's was marketed as some hard-edged, acid-tongued comedy & garnered critic's warm appraisals. It's a snap shot of a shallow, empty, alcoholic depressives deluded existence. Her failings; her broken marriage, her career of diminishing returns as a teen angst novels she finds in the bargain bucket and her cynical downbeat views.
She partially "revives" - but only so she can return to small town USA to steal her teen sweetheart from his wife and their new born child.
The best of it is Theron's performance- real, bitchy, and at times sadly pathetic but sympathetic as well- no mean feat.
Unfortunately, it ambles along in an uneventful "real world" way and aside from a few scenes- feels like the cinematic equivalent of lavender sleepy tea.
