Review of Young Adult (2011) by Mitch B — 15 Jan 2013
I really wanted to like this film. I had high hopes for the second Reitman-Cody collaboration (I loved Juno). But I was quite disappointed. The story itself is interesting enough. And there is typical snarky Cody verbiage peppered throughout.
The problem with the film is that Theron's character is so completely dislikable. Not only do you want her to fail at her quest to steal back lovely Patrick Wilson from lovely Elizabeth Reaser, but you hope she hurts herself in doing so.
And **spoiler alert** she does. But no amount of emotional or physical damage she does to herself is ever enough to satisfy me. She is one of the most despicable creatures ever put on the screen. The only saving grace of this film is Patton Oswalt.
He brings a nerdy gravitas to an otherwise sewer-dwelling film.
