Review of Young Adam (2003) by Stuart M — 14 Dec 2010

I found this film quite difficult to watch, and while I appreciate the amoral actions of the main character is a vessel for the telling of a moral story, I can't just help but think this film tries to push the amoral aspect too far. Despite the characters brilliant acting, I can't help but feel it falls into nothing more than a little bit of soft core porn titillation. There is even a scene which involves custard, ketchup, and spanking. Don't ask.

I really did want to like the film as the actors obviously worked very hard, but The main character Joe, is a thoroughly unlikeable character, and... ****SPOLER**** ... all I wanted was him to get his final comeuppance in the end, however it never happens. ****END SPOILER*** All in all the film was a lot of hard work to watch and did nothing but leave a bitter taste.
