Review of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010) by Paul C — 10 Apr 2011
This movie is a multi-arc story with many characters. Despite this there's no confusion regarding who is who. It deals with the fickleness of life and (a common Allen theme) how difficult it is to stay in a marriage. It's an intriguing and immersing hour and a half and a great evening or date movie. Some reviewers were disappointed that they didn't laugh enough. It is mostly a drama, but despite that there were quite a few very clever laughs throughout the movie.
How some reviewers are calling it "inconsequential" or "rubbish" is, to me, disingenuous. Every movie made is not a classic. People's expectations of this great writer/director don't make sense.
Bottom line: If you're a Woody Allen fan, especially of his drama rather than his comedy, you will thoroughly like these characters and the story. Or, if you don't know Allen but want a nice romp in some late Woody Allen, this is a good choice. Some of the story turns are a little over the top, but I still bought them - I found it all pretty believable. Not a brilliant sea-changing movie but good story and very well acted, filmed and edited.
Sure, there are a few big questions left at the end, but some would say that's a plus.
