Review of You Only Live Twice (2007) by Jason J — 28 May 2008
One of the most parodied and referenced James Bond films in history, this film has all the elements that - eventually - BECAME the cliches. The scarred, bald supervillain. The volcano lair. The bad martial arts, the implausible gadgets, the cheesy one liners.
Roald Dahl's tongue-in-cheek script is brilliant, but set a trend for self-referencing that got out of control in later films. Donald Pleasance is unforgettable as Ernst Stavro Blofeld - James Bond's most pulpable villain.
The last great iconic Bond film till "Casino Royale".
