Review of You Only Live Twice (2007) by Mike D — 03 Jan 2010
This film recovers Bond from the wreckage of Thunderball...just.
Because we are now dealing with No. 1 AKA Ernst Blofeld the head of SPECTRE we can overlook the fact that a hollowed out volcano with a fake lake retractable roof that houses a rocket that captures other rockets is complete and utter poppycock, (yet this is emulated in Goldeneye?!).
PROS:
-The Caribbean is no longer of interest to moviegoers, therefore enter the era of the West's fascination with the East, specifically Japan, begins.
-Asian Bond girls!
-We finally get to see Blofeld. He's a creepy man with a creepy eye who owns a cat. That has troubled childhood written all over it.
CONS:
-Blofeld is essentially just No. 2 he has a bung eye and feeds people to carnivorous fish. No. 2 at least had sharks, Blofeld has piranas which is an amateur maniacal villain cliche. I bet the other insane megalomaniacs at arch nemesis conventions snigger at the guy with piranas.
-They try to pass Bond off as, get this, a Japanese person!
-The age of not being able to hire henchmen that shoot straight begins.
-Ninja's don't wear grey.
