Review of You, Me and Dupree (2006) by Jessica G — 24 Mar 2012
The funniest line of this comedy came after the credits had rolled and the obligatory post-credits joke-clip blurred by, when the movie film caught fire on the unattended projector. "That movie was so bad that it committed suicide," commented my friend. Sadly, he may have been right even though the set-up had potential...
In this PG-13-rated comedy, perpetual bachelor Dupree (Wilson) loses his job for taking time off to attend a couple's wedding, so he guilts the newlyweds (Hudson, Dillon) into letting him freeload on them.
Taking the term "three's a crowd" to the Nth degree, directors Anthony and Joe Russo should have staged an endless parade of unfortunate incidents on the hapless couple a la Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents. Instead, Dupree meanders between two half-baked plotlines: one involving Dupree's fish-out-of-water antics and one involving Dillon battling his ingratiating father-in-law (Michael Douglas). Neither scenario bears much fruit or that many laughs, despite the obvious talent involved.
Bottom Line: Doody makes three.
