Review of You, Me and Dupree (2006) by Adam H — 12 Sep 2011
2 Stars.
Carl and Molly (Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson) are a couple that has just gotten married and are going to settle down in a nice home in a quit neighborhood. Carl and Molly are very happy with there life, that is until Carl's best friend moves in with them. The friend is Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson), Dupree has made his career avoiding, responsibility, commitment, and work, and while his charm mostly manages to keep him going. When he looses his job, his apartment, and his car, Carl just can't bear to see his best friend in that difficult situation. So Carl tells Dupree he can stay with, until he gets everything straightened out, like getting a new job. Carl was just expecting Dupree to be there for a few days, but it is soon very obvious that Dupree has no plans to movie out that fast.
In the beginning, Carl is very happy to have his best friend with, while Molly is the one that doesn't really want him there. With Carl's job becoming more time consuming, he has a harder time juggling his responsibility as a husband and a friend. Soon everyone starts to like Dupree, but he slowly starts to drive Carl crazy, three is just not the number for that house. You, Me, and Dupree just isn't that funny, the main thing that keeps this movie from being unwatchable is Owen Wilson. Owen Wilson is just a really funny guy that can make a movie watchable by just being in it. This is one of those.
Aside from Owen Wilson the other cast members just seem bland, maybe this is because Owen Wilson overshadows everyone else. Matt Dillon, Kate Hudson, and Micheal Douglas are all good actors, but here they are so boring to watch here. Everyone is just very limited with the material. All of the actors deserved much better material than this. The main issue with the characters was identity, all of them suffer from a major identity crises. At completely random moments in the movie, the characters identity's change by whatever someone says about them, or something they say about themselves.
Like I said, the movie isn't that funny, There were a few mildly funny parts, but they were very rare. There is nothing that funny that will make you laugh out loud, pretty much all of the mildly funny scenes come from Owen Wilson. Well that is probably no surprise. Man, without Owen Wilson, this movie would have been a lot worse, and it is already pretty bad. Owen Wilson still can't save this movie enough for me to recommend you see it.
Around half an hour into the movie, you realize you just could have seen the trailer instead of sitting through the entire movie. In the trailer you get two and a half funny minutes, in the movie you get 108 minutes with very little to actually laugh at. This movie could have gone in a number of directions toward the beginning, but it just takes a wrong turn. Overall, this is a dumb, and sometimes obnoxious comedy, that has some funny moments. They are somewhat rare, but there are still there none the less. Just like Dupree, the movie overstays it's welcome.
