Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Adam Z — 01 Aug 2007
When placed amongst much of Capra's other work, it's easy to forget that this little gem exists at all. The film feels for the most part as though we are voyeurs into the weird and wonderful world of the Vanderhof household, the movies origins as a stage play most evident.
Although it lacks the emotion of 'It's A Wonderful Life' or the biting satire of 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington', it remains a charming and funny film, and Lionel Barrymore as the matriarch of the family is the perfect antidote to the mean and miserly Mr Potter.
