Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Rahul O — 05 Jul 2008
You Can't Take It With You was a stupendous effort by Director Frank Capra, yet it wasn't what you would call -- A Masterpiece. 8 years down the line Capra playing along the same theme improvised and perfected his work with "Its A Wonderful Life". I have the greatest regard for this director for the type of cinema he made had great emotional depth; how wonderfully he analyzed people, relationships, society and situations and presented it on celluloid.
You Cant Take It With You, is a great story which makes us realize that only wealth we really can call 'wealth' is the one we can take with us up there. The film mocks artificial boundaries set by social classes, a boundary which after 70 years hasn't been bull-dozed.
Jimmy Stewart's first Capra film has him in a very subdued performance. The stars of this show are Lionel Barrymore, Edward Arnold and the lovely Jean Arthur. Story telling is flawless and the plot very witty. A good old gem of a classic you should watch and introspect!
