Review of You Can't Take It with You (1938) by Sean V — 01 Apr 2010
This is easily in my top 4 of Frank Capra films. The acting is incredibly convincing and the storyline and message strikes a familiar chord and resonates with our culture today. The film may star Jimmy Stewart, but Lionel Barrymore and Edward Arnold steal the show (and seeing Barrymore play a character the polar opposite of Mr.
Potter is delightful too). Set in NYC in the final years of the Great Depression, Capra takes a typical rich-poor mismatch and turns it into a poignant commentary on what is really important in life. As the film's title suggests, there are more important things than those that society values.
You Can't Take It With You should cause you to do some self-reflection and assess your priorities, and that is a powerful accomplishment for a 72 year old film.
